Interesting article here for people who
haven't heard about this. Apparently MS
is giving away just about everything to
college and (eventually) HS students.
A surprising note, to me at least, was that
some colleges are already *majority Mac*!

Why is that suprising? That is likely the reason they're giving away the
software.

I don't recall them ever giving away copies of Professional editions of VB6?
Perhaps dotnet is harder to get rid of than they thought?

Pity they don't give these things away to small organisations and
one-man-bands who can make good use of them rather than kids who'll probably
just register for copies for relatives anyway.

Bitter??? Me??? Ask me that again after I've paid for my upgrade to VS 2008!

What, you mean you wouldn't pay for the chance to
write a web service with 100 MB dependency that only
works on XP SP2 and Vista? Smile

Mary Jo Foley's take seems to be that it's just as
you say: They're fighting for turf that they're losing
fast.
I was amazed at the Mac stats. Last I heard Mac's
were something like 3% of PCs. Now with youth they're
apparently taking over. I do know of 3 young people
offhand (20ish to 30ish) who have switched to Macs
in the past couple of years. In all cases it was because
they're worried about viruses and don't want to be
bothered figuring out how to protect themselves.
They're also all surprisingly ignorant and blase about
personal privacy. I guess the general difference with
that age group is that they've grown up regarding
computers as primarily an entertainment service rather
than a complex tool. Macs fit rather nicely into that new
view.

I took an adult evening class at a local campus about 11 years ago and got
student pricing on VS97 which was upgradable to VS6 which included VB6.

The newspaper here had an article just the other day about some new sort of
trojan/virus that was being propogated through digital picture frames. They said
the best bet was to connect "any new digital devices" to either a Macintosh or Linux
system, to assure they're clean, before connecting them to a Windows box.

The empire is indeed crumbling.

Oh sorry Mike, The original VS97 was thirty five bucks, which now is about
how much it costs for lunch at Wendys with the grandkids.

Right. So VS97 was not free then. Good. I'm glad you agree with me.

Wendy's (whatever that is?) might not charge you and the grandkids very much
for lunch, but they don't give it away for free. If you walked out and
refused to pay for it then they would probably call the police. And neither
did MS ever give away VB6 for free (at least not a properly working version
of it).

But they're giving VB.Net and all sorts of other associated .net stuff
totally free to students. They never, ever gave VB6 free to students (except
the daft and virtually useless control creation edition), and they certainly
never gave away the Professional edition of VB6! Like I said, they're having
a lot of trouble selling VB.Net so they've decided to give it away free to
various groups of people.

What trouble? The way I see it, if you want grass on your lawn, you
sow grass seeds out on the lawn. If you want a forest, you sow pine,
oak, or maple seeds out on the lawn. After a few growth cycles you'll
have a critical mass that will re-seed itself, year to year.

Now, the developer's vista (pun) has changed. Intead of classic VB
Microsoft now wants .Net to grow, so they are seeding the lawn....

I'm in lockstep with you on that. It's like the FREE cigarettes in
c-rations during WWII. Our nation was inundated with a smoking addicted
population that started the monstous growth of the industry.

Just a different poison, same scenario.
