i can find a crystal report component in the visual studio 2005 prof
version.
does it require a lic to build client applications? or require a lic
on the client site to run the application?

You need to ask in a newsgroup with "dotnet" in the name. This group is for
VB 6.0 and earlier and does not include VB.Net or VB 200x.

I know that, but the name "microsoft.public.vb.general.discussion"
might be missleading.. progman probably made that misstake too.. is
there a way to rename the group and keep the threads? something with
vb6 would be more clear on vbclassic (but there is a project called
that)

I'm sure if there was an easy way, it would have been done by now.
Interestingly, though, it looks like at least ONE group has been tagged
specifically (microsoft.public.vb.6.webdevelopment). I wonder if more will
be done like that in the future, or if eventually these groups will be
deprecated and no longer hosted on MS servers?

There's nothing misleading about it. VB or Visual Basic is fine for this
group. It is what we deal with. It is the imposter that needs to be renamed
(the thing that is pretending to be VB). The imposter /is NOT/ Visual Basic.
The imposter should NOT have had either VB or Visual Basic included in its
name, and it was dishonest of Micro$oft to do so.

The name of this (and other VB newsgroups) used the VB in their names LONG,
LONG before Microsoft brought out VB.NET and its VB200x successors; why ever
would you think they should change their names now? The problem is that
these newer Visual Basics are completely different than the classic
versions, but Microsoft chose to keep VB in their names. This is what has
confused the users of these newer versions. On top of that, the latest
versions no longer use .NET in their names, but the newsgroups set up
specifically for the .NET versions have "dotnet" in their names. Unless the
user knows differently, they are unlikely to associate a newsgroup with
"dotnet" in its name with their VB2005 program. The problem here is not the
names of the long existing newsgroups created to handle the original (now
referred to as "classic") versions of Visual Basic.
